Fort Peck Dam – Fort Peck, Montana.
The dam is the world’s largest earth filled dam with more shoreline than the coast of California! Construction began in 1933 and completed in just seven years. The dame is 250 feet high, nearly 4 miles long, and almost a mile wide at the base. The dam was built to help with flood control, irrigation, hydroelectric power and to improved Missouri River navigation. Dam construction included excavation of more than 400 fossils and includes the horn core of a triceratops dinosaur. Powerhouse tours are offered and popular area activities include fossil hunting – be sure to get a permit. The waters of Fort Peck Lake have impressive stats. as well. – 130 miles long and up to 16 miles wide, 1,500 miles of shoreline, and with the million acre Charles Russell National Wildlife Range for buffalo grazing. The recreational area offers boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, and boat ramps too!
